Cat Breeds
Are you thinking about getting a cat to join your family but not sure which breed to get? Let us help. Our breed gallery tells you all the details you will need to consider before making a choice.
As we all know there are a lot of breeds to choose from but did you know the number of official cat breeds changes dependant on who you ask.
- Britannica Encyclopaedia recognises 15 cat breeds
- The Governing Council Of The Fancy Cat recognises 40 cat breeds
- Fédération Internationale Féline recognises 50 cat breeds
- International Cat Association recognises 73 cat breeds
The simplest way to explain why these numbers change is due to the overall classification. Some registries won’t consider non-pedigreed cats that don’t have a full history of their parents’ names and breeds traced going back multiple generations. Other associations include multiple types of cats in one classification, whereas others will separate them into their own categories.
